In-person Holiday Luncheon Planned at iHeart

Chairman Tony McDaid has invited Chapter 36 members and others in the broadcast technical community to meet at the iHeartMedia studios at 9660 Granite Ridge Road. The Thursday, December 16 at 12-noon outdoor gathering (weather permitting) will include food and drinks provided by the chapter. No presentation—just a social gathering to get caught up. 

Informal Objection Filed Against KSDS License Renewal

Michael Halloran, well-known local rock radio personality, filed an 281-page Informal Objection to the FCC license renewal of KSDS (FM) San Diego, a service of the San Diego Community College District. In his 281-page treatise, Halloran touched on several issues with the district’s management of the station:

  • “KSDS’s failure to serve the needs and interests of the community is egregious…Absolutely no news or community-issue oriented programming is presented on the station.” He cites the station’s online public inspection file that he says has no “issues-programming lists.”
  • The station, he said, loses money annually and is financially dependent on San Diego City College for funds that are not used for educational purposes.
  • He repeatedly cites as an example of KSDS management neglect the continued employment of then Chief Engineer Gerald “Larry” Quick. Halloran says fellow employees had complained for years of behavioral issues and abuse. Quick resigned from KSDS in early 2016 after he was accused of theft of station equipment and spent time in jail.

KOGO Applies to Move Transmitter to Santee

iHeartMedia filed an application with the FCC on November 11, 2021, for a Minor Modification to relocate their KOGO (AM) 600 kHz transmission system to the current KGB-AM (formerly KFMB-AM) 760 kHz site at the western boundary of Santee.

The move is part of the sale of the land under the KOGO towers by Vertical Bridge to a residential developer. KLQV (FM) 106.5 and KWFN (FM) 97.3 will also need to move and KWFN has filed to move to the nearby KGB-FM tower.

Why Your Car Radio May Prefer 87.75 Over 87.7

Feedback from our article about KRPE-LD’s conversion to hybrid analog FM digital TV:

I read your article in TV Technology covering the Channel 6 ATSC 3.0 with analog FM STA that is being implemented by Venture Technologies. In the article, you mentioned that Venture needed to shift the FM carrier frequency back to the old NTSC aural location at 87.75 MHz rather than using 87.7 MHz to accommodate automotive receivers.
