Chapter 36 Calls a July Beach Party

Says Chairman Anthony McDaid, “It’s been 15 months since Chapter 36 had an in-person meeting. so I thought it would be nice to have a day at the beach as a way to socialize and find out what everyone has been up to during that time.”

“Please join us July 30th at Mission Bay. Pizza and drinks will be supplied but feel free to bring your own. Parking is nonexistent so best to ride share. Meeting point is 815 Coronado Court, 92109. I will be there from 12:00 noon and will have an easy-up and some chairs already set up on the bay side nearby.”

If you can’t find parking on Mission Boulevard, consider parking at the public lot across Mission Blvd. from the Belmont roller coaster, then walking the quarter mile to Coronado Court.

You’re welcome to bring your significant other. No presentations, just sun and conversation.

Sounds like a good time to celebrate the opening up of COVID protocols. See you there!

SBE Online Presentation: All About WebRTC by Comrex

When Apple, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla team up, you might think, “Nothing good is going to come of this.” You’d be so wrong. An Open Source project is typically the last thing these tech behemoths would ever want to be involved in, let alone with their fiercest rivals. WebRTC is a fascinating example of how good things can be born of necessity and how they can foster cooperation on multiple levels. We’ll discuss the basics of WebRTC and the multitude of applications that are already using it to change the way the world communicates.  This is especially important in light of the rapid evaporation of our “traditional” telco infrastructure. We’ll also cover broadcast-specific applications and the future of live content creation.

SBE members and guests are welcome to join us online Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at 6:30 PM PDT/AZT.

Register in advance for this Zoom meeting here.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

April 13 Online Meeting: C-Band Satellite Repack De-mystified

The C-band auction is in full-swing but it’s surprising how much there is to know as a downlink manager. For example, did you know that TV stations in the top 46 markets (including San Diego and Los Angeles) need to change filters twice in the coming three years? Did you know most radio stations can install a “blue” filter now?

Doug Watson of LinkUp unwraps all this in a Zoom presentation Tuesday, April 13, at 6:30 PM. This meeting, organized by Los Angeles Chapter 47, is open to all members and the curious. Sign-up here.

Doug joined LinkUp last year as a technical sales engineer. LinkUp is doing a lot of the field work of upgrading dishes with new filters and related services.

February 9 Meeting: Scott Fybush Shows Us the Real Deal–Big Radio Tower Steel

Scott Fybush hasn’t been traveling very much this year, of course, but he still has plenty of interesting photos and stories to share in this latest installment of “Tower Sites I’ve Known and Photographed.” Is it really radio’s 100th anniversary year? That’s one of the topics in this edition—along with the steady decline of heritage AM sites, plenty of tales from the field and a few thoughts about what’s in store for the broadcast community in 2021.

Join us in an online narrative and slide show Tuesday, February 9th at 6:00 PM Pacific, 7:00 PM Mountain in cooperation with Chapters 9 in Phoenix and 47 in Los Angeles.

About Scott Fybush

Scott wears many broadcasting hats: a news anchor (now with WXXI Rochester) for 30 years; a journalist covering the industry for his own NorthEast Radio Watch (fybush.com) and Current; an engineering consultant focusing on signal improvement and FCC regulatory issues; a  station broker (StationSale.com); chief engineer for Rochester’s WDKX; and treasurer of Chapter 57.

You might know Scott best as “the tower guy,” recognized for the thousands of broadcast facilities he’s visited and documented on his website and in his annual Tower Site Calendar, now in its 20th year.
