FCC Approves FM 102.1 Transfer to EMF

In mid-December 2015, the FCC approved the transfer of KLVJ (formerly KPRI) FM 102.1 San Diego to the Educational Media Foundation. Owners of Compass Radio, the company that operated KPRI, say they will transfer the operation on January 15, 2016. KLVJ has broadcast a Christian music format since August 31, 2015.

Holiday Luncheon Planned at Casa Machado

Once again Chapter 36 will meet to simply talk shop, share some cheer, and toast to a great coming year.

Our past meeting place, Cozymel’s at UTC, is now rubble, so we’ll gather at Casa Machado, 3750 John J. Montgomery Drive, on the south side of the runways at Montgomery Field in Kearny Mesa, San Diego. Date is Wednesday, December 16, 2015. The meeting time is a bit earlier, at 11:30AM.

Whether you’re a member, a guest, or just came to town, you’re welcome. Expect to spend about $15 – 20 for lunch and a tip.

If you would like to donate a gift for an exchange, let us know and bring it with you.

Matt Schiller Heads to Houston

Past term SBE 36 Secretary-Treasurer and KGTV Engineer Matthew Schiller is moving to KPRC-TV Houston. There, he’ll become the Project Manager for the NBC affiliate station as it builds a new facility from the ground up in its parking lot. Matt had worked at KGTV for the past seven years and had led the effort to build a new studio. His wife recently gave birth to twins.

EMF Sends KPRI Callsign to Julian

The FCC in late October approved the Educational Media Foundation’s request to swap callsigns between two of their San Diego County FM stations. 102.1 MHz on Mt. Soledad became KLVJ and 100.1 Julian became KPRI. This is the third frequency in San Diego to identify itself as KPRI, the first being 106.5 in the 1970s and early 80s.

Does this signal an intent to sell the Julian property? Does anyone else find it interesting that both KLVJ 102.1 and KLQV 102.9, transmitting from the same building atop Soledad, market themselves as K-LOVE (though the latter is in Spanish)?
