Harris Clears the Air on Endec

Dear Mr. Stigall,

Recently an article appeared in your San Diego SBE newsletter regarding our Sage Endec. Since, we understand, you're not a user of the Sage Endec, we are concerned that you may not have had complete information about some of the details, activities, and customer service provided on a continuing basis since Sage Endec was introduced. We would like to set the record straight on several points.

1. Every Sage Endec operating with software version 5.88 or higher is completely Y2K and FCC part 11 compliant. We have applied the Federal Government's definition of Y2K compliance and a detailed understanding of Part 11 to this compliance certification.

2. Version 5.88 was distributed free of charge to every owner of record in July of 1997.

3. The most recent version (5.111) fixes a printing anomaly in a rarely-used printing option ("menu.alerts.view" in the alert log function). This option allows the operator to print out a list of old alerts (the last 47 alerts, which are stored in the Endec's memory). In this single instance, the print out will show the year as 100 for 2000, 101 for 2001, etc. It should be noted that part 11 does not require the year to be logged. The year is printed solely as a convenience.

4. The alert log printed at the completion of an alert and which is the legal record of the alert will print the year as 00 for 2000, 01 for 2001, etc. Again, it is important to note, the year is not required by Part 11.

Harris continues to stand behind all of the products we manufacture and distribute. We offer service updates, upgrades and revisions at the lowest possible cost to our customers.

In the case of Sage software updates, they are free to those stations who wish to download them over the web, burn their own EPROM and install it. If the customer wishes Harris to burn the EPROM and ship it to them, then there is a charge.

Opinions will always vary on how long and to what extent a manufacturer should be held liable for "free" service. We respect different opinions and as with any input from our marketplace, will take the criticism stated in your article seriously.

Sincerely,

Ellis Terry
District Sales Manager, Southwestern U.S. Region
