Convicted of FraudKFMB "Engineer" Convicted of Fraud in Orange County By Gary Stigall Ex-KFMB radio engineer Matt Edward Mathews has been convicted in Orange County of felony grand theft in a series of cons against women. Mathews, known as "Ed" here and as "Mr. Wonderful" by a victim 15 years ago, joined KFMB radio this winter but suddenly failed to appear for work. He was recognized on the KFMB-TV noon news the next day facing a jury trial in Orange County. According to the Los Angeles Times, a jury convicted Mathews, 61, of defrauding six women of more than $34,000. He has been sentenced to nine years in prison and ordered to pay restitution. According to an October story in the San Diego Union-Tribune that quoted ex-girlfriends and private investigators, Mathews would boast "that he was a race-car driver, NASA pilot, architect or medical student. Mathews resumed his con-man lothario role after he was paroled in 1993 from a fourth prison sentence." Mathews is not an SBE certified engineer. | |||
