Rohde & Schwarz Joins Chapter

Gary Stigall, CSTE
Chairman, Chapter 36
KFMB-TV Staff Engineer

This month we welcome Linc Reed-Nickerson and Rohde & Schwarz as new chapter sponsors. If you're not familiar with the products, take a look around at their web site, www.rohde-schwarz.de. It was explained to me early in my career that their exotic broadcast television test gear had an impeccable reputation for quality. That tradition continues.

By the way, the accepted American pronunciation is "ROH-dee and shwarts," though Germans would round the R's and say "ROH-duh oond shvarz."

We were fortunate to have Linc at the March chapter meeting. He's an industry technical veteran and fun to talk to. Bring up steam trains and China, and you've got yourself a great conversation.

Linc tells us, "In June 1999 Rohde & Schwarz dissolved their distributor agreement with Tektronix TV Test business unit in order to establish a US Sales force and sell directly to customers. During the period of time Rohde & Schwarz used Tektronix as their distribution arm they were very successful. Rohde & Schwarz is moving in direction divergent from the Tektronix goals and we have decided to work directly with customers. The focus for Rohde & Schwarz will be RF test for 8VSB, MPEG and Audio testing.

"Some of you may know me from my years at Tektronix where I was Product Development Manger for Transmission Test products. Prior to joining Tektronix I was TV Chief Engineer in WPXI-TV, Pittsburgh, PA and WDIV-TV, Detroit, MI. Before becoming a Chief I was a maintenance technician for WBZ-TV, Boston. During the 1970's I owned 3 AM and 1 FM Station in Pennsyalvania, Connecticut and Upstate New York.

"I joined Rohde and Schwarz in 1999 as the Western Region Sales Manager, with an office in Long Beach, CA. As the region grows and I add sales and applications engineers I will be returning to my home in metro-Portland, OR. Look for Rohde & Schwarz to add to their line of ATSC and MPEG baseband and RF test equipment for broadcast during 2000."
