June 2000 Meeting Notes

Audemat Star of the Meeting

Gary Stigall

Dan Rau, Audemat Corp.

If you've ever carried around a field strength meter for a day doing a proof of your station's RF performance, or even spot-checked your signal for comparative strength in your market, you'd appreciate the Audemat shown at our June 21 meeting at KPBS. Dan Rau made an astounding demonstration of the signal sampling device designed to measure up to 99 radio stations as you drive around. Simply driving from the airport that day, he sampled 15 stations and showed us various graphs and charts to sample their relative strengths. Data output formats seemed to be limited only by the operator's creativity and motivation to demonstrate signal superiority to the PD. Optional software allows you to make more qualitative analysis on a single signal, including actual audio sampling for "multipath vs. fuzz" checks.

With Mike Tosch, Chris Durso, and most of the current KPBS staff there, the meeting had the feeling of a reunion.

In chapter business, I reported on the purchase of our new digital camera, an Olympus D-360L. Scott Stinson of KPBS is investigating avenues for providing funds for deserving students interested in a career in broadcast engineering. We hope to hear a report in July.
