July 2000 Meeting

A Peek at the Birthplace of Digital Television

Randy Phillips, CSTE
Program Chairman, Chapter 36
Cox Communications San Diego

The term "Digital Television" has become an important buzzword for our industry recently, conjuring up images in the mind of the entertainment consumer of everything from "little 1's and 0's emanating out of a fiber", to dark and mysterious giant, expensive TV screens. Most of the SBE folks are aware of some of the intricacies of the subject, BUT, DID YOU KNOW that the company which originally developed Digital Television is right here in San Diego?

General Instrument, which has just completed its $17 billion merger with Motorola in the last year, will show their presentation of a salute to the pioneers of digital television at their Broadband facility in Sorrento Valley.

TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Frank Logan, Sr. Sales Manager for Motorola's Broadband Sector, has very graciously invited the SBE 36 chapter members to a video presentation he had done for the 10th anniversary of Digital Television last month. As Frank says, "DTV was developed here in San Diego by some very bright people, and we brought them all together for this anniversary. It's an interesting testimonial to some bright minds in our town."

Frank will also be doing a short presentation on what they do at Motorola, specifically in San Diego at the Satellite and Broadcast Networks Division of the Broadband Communications Sector. The broadband sector was created to focus the company's energy to continue its position as a leader in the convergence of voice, video and data technologies. These "broadband solutions", will deliver interactive television, the Internet and telephone services over wired and wireless networks.

Join us, July 19th, at 6:00 pm at the Motorola Broadband Communications Sector, 6450 Sequence Drive, San Diego, for refreshments and a short business meeting, followed at 7:00 by Frank's presentation.

Reservations are required! E-mail or call Randy at 619-266-5070, telling us the names of those in your party. Identification is required at the door, as security will be checking attendees against the SBE directory and reservation list.
