KFMB's Transmitter Guy

The Adventures of 'Shorty'

Photos by Rick Bosscher
KFMB-TV RF Supervisor

DTV transmitter projects are progressing in San Diego in anticipation of the required November 1 sign-on date. KFMB's Rick Bosscher has plenty of competent help, as evidenced by these photos of assistant "Shorty."

Shorty's not intimidated by this large Comark UHF transmitter in spite of his relative size. Rick reports that he works tirelessly toward the deadline, staying on site day and night, apparently without concern for food or rest.

In spite of the safety blunders you may spot, Shorty hasn't had an accident yet. Here, he's apparently inspecting some control interface wiring. Rick says Shorty is as competent as any transmitter engineer he's worked with at KFMB, and hasn't yet made a mistake in wiring the remote control system.

Not everybody would want to spend the better part of a day kneeling in front of this electrical cabinet, but Shorty doesn't complain. Looks like appropriate job delegation to us. In spite of his name, no reports of placing a wrench across the 480 volt buses yet.
