August Meeting ReviewAbout Princeton Graphics, Logic Innovations, and Detail By Gary Stigall You become jaded after awhile. Someone leaned over to me during the demo and said, "I've seen these gorgeous HDTV pictures for ten years now. When do I get one in my living room?" Methinks we're almost there. For $4,000 Princeton Graphics (remember the folks who introduced real color to the IBM-XL computer?) offers a 40 MHz bandwidth 480p/720p/1080i monitor with 30" of viewable diagonal screen space and warmer, more realistic color temperature phosphors than the Japanese guys. Less than the cost of a Tektronix or Conrac studio monitor from the days of yore. Factory rep Rey Roque knows monitors, having worked for Mitsubishi and Conrac, and he knows how to put on a crisp, intelligent presentation. Ray guesses that the $2,500 price point will put a monitor into living rooms--less in real dollars than the Packard Bell black and white my parents bought in 1957. For a signal source, Tom Boldt of Logic Innovations showed off his sweet, luggable DTV server good for up to a few hours of whatever you'd like to dispense. Meant primarily for laboratory and demonstration purposes, he had us wanting to take it back to our stations to play with. In chapter business, Fred Gotwald mentioned new sponsor Gepco Cable and I discussed elections next month. Both subjects are mentioned elsewhere in this newsletter. |
