MembershipChapter 36 Continues Growth By Gary Stigall, CSTE Larry Rowin
After twenty-five years as a driver for San Diego Transit, Larry Rowin is starting a second career in broadcasting with electronics classes this fall at Palomar College. "I have had such a busy schedule with work, classes and home life. It will be pretty intense through the next year. Palomar has a program where you do three semesters worth of work in one semester so it only takes one year. I have always been interested in electronics and broadcasting all my life. I am multi-talented person and don't mind doing anything from tweaking transmitters, matching SWR, or taking apart or building computers. Right now I need the professional experience that goes along with it, that is why I am returning to school." "When I get out of school I would like to get a job at a station." Dennis Younker
Says new member Dennis Younker, headend supervisor, of Cox Cable, "I've been in the CATV industry for 22 years, 17 in the headends. I've gone from a headend with one satellite dish and 13 channels (220 MHz bandwidth) in 1977 to Cox San Diego with nine headends, looking at 12 satellites, programming 81 analog channels and dozens of digital channels, running PCS, cable modems and digital telephone service through 750 MHz of two way interactive cable plant! There truly never has been a dull moment! Today, I enjoy working with all these new technologies as well as continuing to work closely with broadcast engineers to ensure top quality signals to viewers. Recently, I've overseen construction and activation of new headends around the county, and been involved in the launch of digital TV and telephone. Presently, we're preparing to beta test a VOD (video on demand system) with a hotel in Mission Valley. Like I said, never a dull moment!" About his family: "I'm married to a wonderful girl, Karen, and we have a total of five kids from our prior marriages. Our oldest made us grandparents last year!" Other new members include: Billy Schultz, currently on duty with the Army in South Korea; recently highlighted Bruce Rogow of KPBS; returning member Peter Burinskas; and the many KNSD operating technicians certified and written about over the past several months. |
